The social benefit of Ocean Waste Plastic

The start of 2020 has been amazing and Ocean Waste Plastic keeps growing every month.

The social benefit

The continuous growth means that we collect more and more plastic every month, and that we are required to increase our set up in Indonesia. In January we signed contract with 3 new fishermen and in February with 2.

Besides cleaning our oceans for plastic, we believe in making a positive impact in the local communities where we operate, and it is important for us to give back to enhance their living conditions. We have for over 2 years been operating in local communities in Indonesia, and can see a recognizable difference.

Community assistance

With the increase of disasters happening all over the world, we are working to improve and to identify opportunities to make a greater impact to help communities when they need it most.

We have started to see directly that Pack Tech’s efforts are making a difference. There is significantly less plastic ending at our beaches now than there was 2 years ago. We hope they keep increasing the effort to remove the plastic.

Increase in income

One direct benefit local families are experiencing by being a part of our Ocean Waste Plastic team, is an increase in income. They are able to double their income by collecting plastic, which gives them an opportunity to give their children an education, more nourishing food and appropriate clothing and footwear.

Assistance in survival skills

The capital of Indonesia, Jakarta, is regularly flooded caused by the raining season, and is one of the fastest sinking cities in the world. Every year the city sinks 25 cm, and experts predict that large parts of the capital in 2050 will be under water. Small villages in the outskirts of Jakarta are deeply affected by the heavy rain and flooding, as their houses are in water 50% of the time.

We are supporting the local families with how they are able to improve their houses, so they are secured in heavy rain and flooding. One of the techniques we are teaching them is how to increase the height of their house from the ground (and water) by using bamboo. Furthermore we are donating all the materials that are used and the specialist doing the workshops.
