What does OWP stand for?

OWP is the acronym for Ocean Waste Plastic. OWP is recycled plastic containing plastic from the ocean, rivers, beaches or aread nearby where plastic potentially floats into the oceans. For every kilo of OWP, 1 kilo of plastic removed from the ocean.

How do we verify and document OWP?

We work with an external partner who is able to document and verify every batch of plastic collected. Our partner works with transparent supply chain documentation, which makes it easy to verify where, and how the plastic is collected. Our partner is an industry-leading organisation who is com- mitted to saving the planet by removing plastic from the ocean. Based on documentation and verification from our partners, we are able to supply a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) on the raw material and a Certificate of Conformity (CoC) with each packaging delivery.

How clean is OWP compared to virgin resin, and is it safe to use?

Being a recycled raw material, OWP is analyzed and tested before being released. Only when it passes all relevant tests, it is ready to be used in our packaging.

What materials can be supplied as OWP?

Pack Tech supplies OWP in Polypropylene (PP) and Polyethylene (PE).

Which colours can OWP be supplied in?

As it is a recycled material, white and transparent colors are difficult. OWP can be colored, but as the base material is not transparent or pure white, colors will appear different than on virgin materials.

Can OWP be supplied in transparent?

Unfortunately not at this stage.

How is the percentage of OWP in the packaging measured?

We need to consider three types of packaging, when the percentage is calculated in the specific packaging:

  1. Mono-material packaging with no “engine” (no pumping function). E.g. bottles, and closures and 1-layer jars.
  2. Multi-material packaging with no “engine” (no pump function). E.g. 2-layer jars
  3. Multi-material packaging with “engine” (there is a pump function). E.g. airless, foamers, dispensers and sprayers.
Mono-material packaging with no “engine” The percentage of OWP is the actual amount of OWP in the packaging. E.g. if the weight of a PE bottle is 20 grams and 10 grams of OWP is used as the PE, the amount of OWP is 50%. Multi-material packaging with no “engine” The percentage of OWP is measured as the percentage of OWP used as PE and PP materials in the packaging. E.g. if a 2-layer jar consists of 40 grams acrylic 40 grams PP (20 grams or 50% is made in OWP) the percentage of OWP in this jar will be 25%. Multi-material packaging with “engine” The percentage of OWP is measured as the percentage of OWP used as PE and PP materials in the packaging. E.g. if a foamer consists of 40 grams of PP (20 grams is made in OWP) 40 grams of PE (10 grams is made in OWP) the percentage of OWP in this jar will be 37,5%. As OWP may slightly increase tolerances in the material, OWP is not used for any parts moving towards each other (e.g. a pump engine) to eliminate any risk of dysfunction.

What is the best OWP percentage to use?

There is no such thing as a “best percentage”. The difference mainly arises from a cost perspective, or the willingness to clean the oceans (1:1 for each kilo of OWP, 1 kilo of plastic is removed from the oceans). The amount of OWP will in general not affect the quality of the packaging.
